THE NEW BOKO HARAM (MIDDLE BELT AND SOUTHERN): CULTURAL IMPERIALISM AND PASTORAL JIHADISM IN NIGERIA

If We Must Die

If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursèd lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!
- Claude McKay

Introduction:

This essay argues that the unprecedented and widespread insecurity – terrorism, insurgency, militancy, herdsmen attacks, communal clashes, kidnap for ransom and extortion (KRE), cultism amongst other security challenges stifling Nigeria(ns), are inter alia, a byproduct of Nigeria’s old-school, bureaucratic security and intelligence establishments’ knack to be REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE, innovative. As a result of this inertia, scores of Nigerian citizens are randomly murdered, kidnapped daily. While the Nigerian security agencies are overwhelmed, helpless and bereft of pragmatic solutions to the security challenges, the government of the day is strongly averse to taking responsibility; buck-passing and finger-pointing are its stock-in-trade. It beggars belief that while the government maintains an omerta when Nigerians are butchered, same government swiftly commiserates with foreign governments over tragedies in their clime. With life expectancy hovering at 54.5 years, one is tempted to ask, what is the value of life in Nigeria?

PART FOUR

SERIES: PASTORAL JIHADISM AND CULTURAL IMPERIALISM

THE DOMINATION OF THE HAUSA AND FULANI PEOPLE OVER THE BELT AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY...AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW...

Enter & Exeunt, Ahmadu Bello: This nation called Nigeria shall be an estate to us from our great-grand father, Uthman Dan Fodio. We shall vigorously resist a change of power. We shall manipulate the minorities of the north, and we shall regard the South as a conquered territory."

---- Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto in Parrot Magazine, Wednesday, October 12, 1960.

PART THREE

Mr Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida actually stocked the fire of religious war and intolerance in Nigeria by enlisting her in the OIC in 1986. Also, it was during his ignominious reign that bombs exploding in public places became a permanent feature of heightening insecurity and Weapons of Mass Intimidation (WMI) in that country, beginning first, with the killing of one of Nigeria's high-flying journalists, Mr Dele Giwa. But today as he ensconced in his obscene Minna mansion built with public money ( - or a gift from Julius Berger?), ignorant Nigerian journalists still refer to him as an elder statesman. From Uthman Dan Fodio through arrogant Ahmadu Bello to Muhammadu Buhari, it is still the same old script and the rushing and actual relocation of the Federal Capital to Abuja from Lagos, on Deceamber 12, 1991, using Akinola Aguda and Tai Solarin are all part of the Sharia Creep in Nigeria.

PART TWO

"And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions." - King Rehoboam in the Bible. 1 Kings 12:11

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Introduction:

It is globally established that the primary responsibility of a sovereign state encompasses the protection, security or safety of lives and properties and creation of the right atmosphere where economic, social activities thrive. Decline or complete absence of such prerequisites by acts of commission or omission implies the sovereign state is inching towards a failed state. For clarity, a ‘’failed or failing state’’, refers to ‘’a political entity or nation in which the government is inept at living up to the basic tasks of a sovereign State, is on the verge of losing or has already lost political authority, control’’. Some of the unmistakable characteristics of a failing/failed sovereign state include very weak institutions, culture of impunity, gross human right abuses, absence of rule of law, unprecedented and entrenched corruption, incessant strife and instability, geometrical depreciation in security, safety of lives and properties, liberty and the standard of living.

Gov. Ayodele Fayose has emerged as the Champion of the Nigerian people. He is the knight in shining armor who has ridden forth to challenge the organized crime syndicate that goes by the name MACBAN: the criminal organization that has been making human sacrifices to the Caliphate’s Cattle.

No doubt kidnapping for ransom and extortion (KRE) is a global problem. The gist is that this heinous crime has assumed dangerous dimensions in Nigeria. Kidnapping in Nigeria is vastly underreported. More often than not, it is the high profile victims of kidnapping - politicians, journalists amongst others in Nigeria that receive media attention and that of security agents. Nonagenarians, Statesmen, monarchs, clergies, even children are not spared by kidnappers in Nigeria. That two Catholic Reverend Sisters were recently kidnapped in Ondo State, South-West Nigeria and a ransom of N20 million was placed on them tells the abysmal level of moral decadence, desperation and growing level of insecurity in Nigeria. Just recently, it was in the news that Nigeria Police officers uncovered a kidnappers den in River State. At the risk of sounding alarmist, kidnappings in Nigeria will not subside anytime soon if the remote and immediate causes are not sorted.

This essay aims to critically analyze recent upshots: the relapse to agitation, militancy, bombing of crude oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta. Prevailing realities and information will be juxtaposed to help us reconcile or connect the dots between the remote, immediate causes of this reincarnated Niger Delta agitation and plausible socioeconomic and security implications.

Our Aims

  • To expose all levels of corruption in Nigeria, especially official corruption and by so doing ensure probity and accountability in every sphere of the Nigerian life.
  • To within the body politic stir up the spirit of nationalism amongst Nigerians aimed at pushing back the tides of ethnic chauvinism, tribal jingoism, religious bigotry, oligarchism, cronyism and nepotism.
